You need to get a EIN/ Tax ID Number if you:
• Started a new business
• Hired or will hire employees, including household employees
• Need to open a business bank account or want to start a business line of credit
• Changed the legal character or ownership of your organization (i.e. from sole proprietor to corporation)
• Formed or created a trust, pension plan, corporation, partnership, LLC
• Represent an estate that operates a business after the owner’s death.
This EIN is your permanent number and can be used immediately
for most of your business needs, including:

-Filing a tax return by mail
If you already have an EIN, and the organization or ownership of your business changes, you may need to apply for a new number.

All customers whose principal business, office or agency, or legal residence (in the case of an individual) is located in the United States or in one of the U.S. Territories can apply for an EIN online.
The principal officer, general partner, grantor, owner, trustor etc. must have a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (Social Security Number, Employer Identification Number, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) in order to use the online application.
If you were incorporated outside of the United States or the U.S. territories, you cannot apply for an EIN online.
