Clear answers on nexus, registration, filing schedules, and cost — for non-residents, foreign LLCs, and expats.
Possibly. Sales tax follows your customers, not your address. If your sales into a state cross its threshold, that state requires sales tax registration and collection regardless of your citizenship or where you live. Your home country's tax rules are separate and unaffected.
Two things. Physical nexus — an office, staff, or inventory in a state, including stock in an Amazon warehouse. Economic nexus — enough sales into a state on their own, commonly $100,000 or 200 transactions a year. Most non-resident sellers are caught by the second.
No, and this trips up most founders. Sales tax is administered by individual state revenue departments, not the IRS. It's a separate registration, a separate number, and a separate filing schedule from your federal return.
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska permits local jurisdictions to charge their own sales taxes, so some Alaskan sales still create an obligation. The other 45 states do charge.

Yes. Your EIN is federal. Each state issues its own sales tax permit number, and registering in five states means five numbers, five portals, and five filing schedules.
